How to Set Up Abandoned Cart Recovery on Shopify

How to Set Up Abandoned Cart Recovery on Shopify

If you've ever checked your store's analytics and seen people adding products to cart but not completing checkout, you already have a valuable list of warm leads sitting untouched. Abandoned cart recovery is one of the easiest ways to try to bring those visitors back, without spending anything extra on new ads.

What Abandoned Cart Recovery Actually Does

When someone adds a product to their cart and leaves without completing the purchase, Shopify can automatically send them a follow-up email reminding them about what they left behind — sometimes with a small incentive to complete the order.

This matters because a visitor who added to cart already showed real intent. They're a much warmer lead than someone who never engaged with your store at all.

Step 1: Check If It's Already Built In

Shopify has a basic abandoned checkout email feature built into most plans already. To check:

  1. Go to Settings → Checkout
  2. Scroll to Abandoned checkouts
  3. Make sure automatic recovery emails are turned on

This built-in option is simple — usually a single automated email sent a few hours after someone abandons their cart.

Step 2: Consider a Dedicated App for More Control

If you want more than one follow-up email, or want to add SMS/WhatsApp reminders (which can matter more than email for Pakistani buyers who check WhatsApp far more often), a dedicated marketing app like Klaviyo or Omnisend gives you more flexibility:

  • Multiple follow-up messages spaced out over a few days, not just one
  • The ability to add a small discount or urgency element in later messages
  • SMS or WhatsApp-based reminders in addition to email

Step 3: Write a Message That Doesn't Feel Like Spam

A generic "you left something in your cart" message is fine, but a slightly more human tone tends to perform better — briefly reminding them what they were interested in, reassuring them about things like Cash on Delivery or easy returns, and giving one clear next step (a button back to checkout).

Step 4: Don't Overdo the Follow-Up

Sending too many reminder messages too aggressively can annoy potential customers instead of converting them. A short sequence — one relatively quick reminder, followed by one more a day or two later — is usually enough without feeling pushy.

Why This Matters More Than It Seems

Abandoned cart recovery doesn't fix a fundamentally broken product page or a mismatched ad audience, but for visitors who already showed real interest, it's a low-cost way to recover sales you would have otherwise lost completely. If you're already spending money on ads to get people to your product page, this is one of the cheapest ways to get more value out of the traffic you already paid for.
