Shopify Horizon Theme Review: Is It Worth Using in 2026?

When I was setting up my store, I went with Shopify's Horizon theme, one of Shopify's newer official free themes. After actually building a store on it, here's my honest take.

What Horizon Actually Is

Horizon is one of Shopify's official, free themes, built on the newer Online Store 2.0 architecture. That means it's organized into flexible, section-based blocks rather than a rigid fixed layout, which gives more customization freedom without needing to touch code.

What I Liked

Clean, modern default look. Without any customization at all, Horizon already looks reasonably professional out of the box — not the dated, cluttered look some older free themes have.

Genuinely flexible section-based editing. Being able to add, remove, and rearrange sections (hero banners, featured collections, custom text blocks) without code made setup a lot faster than I expected as a beginner.

Good mobile responsiveness by default. Since most of my traffic is mobile, this mattered a lot — I didn't need to do extra work to get a decent mobile layout.

It's free. Being an official Shopify theme, there's no upfront cost, which mattered a lot given I was building this store on almost no budget.

What Frustrated Me

Color schemes are split across multiple numbered "schemes," and it's not always obvious which section uses which one. I ran into this directly — updating one scheme didn't automatically update every visible section, because different parts of the site (header, hero, product cards, buttons) can each be assigned a different scheme number. This made full rebranding more tedious than I expected.

Some settings are buried in menus that aren't intuitive for a first-time user. Finding specific settings (like button colors versus general theme colors) took more digging than it should have, especially early on before I understood the theme's structure.

Announcement bar and navigation styling can visually clash with the rest of the site if you're not careful, since they don't automatically inherit your main color scheme unless you specifically assign them to it.

Who Horizon Is Actually a Good Fit For

If you're a beginner who wants a modern-looking, genuinely free theme and doesn't mind spending some time learning where things are, Horizon is a solid starting point — it's popular for a reason, and it's one of the more commonly used themes among smaller stores in my own niche research.

If you want something you can fully brand and launch quickly with minimal fiddling, be prepared to spend real time going through every scheme and section individually to make sure your branding is applied consistently everywhere, not just on the page you happen to be looking at.
